The Semicolon; The Question
In the English language, the semicolon indicates a pause. A breath before the thought continues. A mark of connection; a testament that the author chose not to end the sentence, but to carry it forward.
In my native Greek, this symbol transforms. It is not a pause; it is a query. It is the erotimatiko (ερωτηματικό): the question mark.
This artwork, Semicolon, rendered in a vibrant constellation of points, holds this essential duality. It is both the persistent continuation and the fundamental question. It is the visual shape of the most profound interrogation we can level at ourselves.
My work is deeply influenced by the philosophers of my Greek heritage. The teachings of Socrates echo in my worldview, shaping my approach to art as a form of inquiry. I often return to the Socratic question that sits at the root of all ethics:
What sort of person should I be?
And its powerful variants:
How should I live my life?
What values shall I live by?
What should I aim for?
This is not a question seeking a finite answer to be filed away. It is a question that defines a life. It is the compass we use to navigate our own transformation. To be human is to be in a constant state of becoming, and this question is the engine of that becoming. It is the principle at the heart of my work: to search, to look beneath the surface, to illuminate not only what is, but what might be.
This query is the soul of Blazing Minds
In parallel, the symbol resonates with a powerful modern meaning in its English sense. It is the mark an author uses when they could have ended a sentence, but instead, chose to continue.
This potent metaphor, championed by the global mental health movement Project Semicolon, has become a profound emblem of resilience: a personal statement of survival, a testament to the choice to carry on.
To live an authentic life is to embrace this duality: to bravely live the question — the Greek mark — and to resolutely choose to continue — the English pause — especially when the path is obscured. It is the dialogue between our light and shadow, those moments when, as in an eclipse, obscurity gives way to illumination, and we begin to see anew.
This piece is not a statement. It is an interrogation
It is a vibrant, persistent query offered to you, a quiet space for your own reflection. In the contemplative space between its two forms, it holds the entirety of the Socratic journey.
It asks us not what we do, but who we are choosing to become.
